I've never paid a great deal of attention to 3D concept guys, but I think I'm going to start. Because they don't have any fancy linework or brushwork or anything, their work succeeds or fails almost completely on concept.
Working on the comic I've realized my 'visual library' as Feng Zhu would put it is sparsely populated. Because its an original universe, it's a matter of constant concepting on the fly.
On another level, I feel that with some of the best 3d guys who have a flair for pinup imagery, there's a really fresh approach in terms of camerawork, lighting etc when compared to the tradition of sci-fi and fantasy art.

This also resonates with me, as I've been taking as much influence from stuff like street photography and photojournalism as comics when it comes to say, character poses and body language.
